Pastel on apricot pastel paper.  The nude female model is shown sitting sideways and looking up to the left. The strong yellow surface influences the whole picture. A bright, cheerful sketch.

Nude a day 29: Grace

Pastel on dark brown pastel card.  The nude female model is shown backview sitting on a blue cloth. The highlights on the hair are a different colour to the highlights on the flesh and the blue quilt. As in the previous picture, I create flesh tone using the brown card colour as shade and the light pink colour as highlight.

Nude of the day 28: Mysterious copper light

Pastel on brown pastel card. The nude female model is slightly turned away from  the viewer and stepping forward. The dark behind the face shows the face without an outline.  The copper pink highlights  on the flesh make the picture. Here again I use the colour of the ground (the brown pastel card) as a flesh tone.

Nude a day 27: Early morning stretch

A 5 minute light pastel sketch.  The nude female model is shown standing and stretching with her hands behind her the back of her neck.  I like the confidentpose and the minimal use of colour.  The pose really shows her body which is very beautiful and shapely.

Nude a day 26: Such a glorious day

Nude a day 24: Curled up

Nide a day 22: In a very beautiful place

Nude a day 21: Rosy afterglow

Pastel on warm brown pastel card,  5 minute pose.  The nude female model is seated side view on a light yellow quilt.  The sunlight catches her knees, her lower arms, between the shoulders and upper chest, breast, cheekbones and forehead,  The light stripe on the quilt gives a sense of diagonal movement to the seated pose.  For a longer pose I would have drawn into the hands resting on her thigh, and put a cool colour in the background.

Nude a day 20: Gazing at the moonlit sea

Brown pastel on white paper.  Five minute sketch. The picture shows a nude female model from the side.  She is sitting on a couch with her face leaning on her hands and the rose tattoo on her leg showing prominently.
The dark pastel tones behind bring forward the body. I have not shaded behind the hair whch has it's own shadows. I feel the weight of the body on the soft quilt.

Nude a day 18: Today will be wonderful

Light red pastel on white pastel paper. The picture is a front view of a nude female model sitting with her elbows on her knees and her hands clasped together near her face.  Knees are together, feet apart.  I like the expressive effect of red pastel drawn on rough white paper.

Nude a day 17: Morning Dew

Charcoal on white paper.  The picture shows a seated nude from behind in a 2 minute pose drawn with a single line. I like the way the speed of the very brief time alloted to the posecreates a simplicity of line. All detail is ignored onllythe lightness and the weight of the line is shown.

Day 16 - Strolling along

This a light pencil drawing and I have shaded the backgrounfwhich works very well as the model stands out. The picture shows a female nude walking, half turned towards you. . A light delicate drawing and I put darker accents into the hair.  Her face is turned away but she is in a dream world and very happy.

Day 15: Amazing graceful flexibility

She effortlessly swung into this pose and asked "How long would you like? 20 minutes?" We settled on three minutes.

Charcoal on white paper, the picture shows a nude woman in an extreme position holding her  foot bent behind her in the crook of her arm.  In three minutes there is barely time to look and assess, the charcoal flies silently inro speedy action, capturing the basic sweep of the pose, where light and shade falls and that's it.  A lot of fun, like an adventure. Often the result is incomprehensible, but it is the experience of doing it that is the main thing, the result is an added bonus - sometimes.

Day 14 - Asleep on blue quilt

Pastel on grey pastel ground. The picture shows a nude woman lying on a blue quilt with deep shadow behind the body, left arm up past her head, left leg draped over right folded knee.  I like the colours I've used, the turquoise blue quilt, the rose tinged flesh and the deep purple blue beyond that fades to a medium cyan.

Day 12: Flamboyant!

Charcoal on paper.  Two minute pose, one single line. Front view of a female nude with her arms reaching in the air. She is pointing her left toe as she swings her balance towards her right leg.  I really like the expressive pose and the economy of line.

Day 11: Early morning

Charcoal on white paper. The picture shows a standing female nude with a strong shadow behind her legs.  The model is holding a folded cloth and is half turned to the right, standing by a folding chair.  This is one of my strongest nude drawings and I am pleased that I did it.

Day 10: Langourously leaning

Water based painting on white paper.  There is blue felt tip which is how I began it.  Then I liked the flow of paint better than the felt-tip.  The picture shows the side/back view of a nude woman reclining on a bed.

Day 9: Just an eyelash

Femal nude standing - 30 minutes. Pastel on blue pastel card.  Yellow and pink background colours help to define the ochres of her standing body, side view.  Her hands lightly resting on a folded towel on a chairback.  The face, turned away, is not visible except for the flick of an eyelash. The poses in this series are from 1 to 30 minutes.  The length of the pose is not always shown.

Day 8: Adjusting her hair - front view

Three-minute pose. Charcoal on pastel paper, female nude, full frontal pose, sitting, arms up, hands behind her head, which is looking down towards her left side. Right toe tucked behind left thigh, her balance is quite perfect.  This pose is similar to the back view in the previous post on January 7th, but the pose is not the same.  I would like to see them hung as a pair, like the picture below.  I would put them so that they are looking towards each other, rather than looking as if they are two women who are not speaking to each other even though it ise the same model.

Day 7: Fixing her hair - back view

The picture is charcoal on white paper, a 2 minute sketch. The picture shows a nude woman from behind kneeling with her left leg forward, knee bent, right leg pointing back. Her hands are up fixing her hair.  The left ear and the left breast are visible.  The picture is below this text so that it is easily comparable to the picture that follows in the next post.

Day 6: At last I can relax completely!

Day 5: Rosy glow of sunset

Pastel painting on dull dark brown pastel card with subdued lighting and with a pink carpet and rosy pink highlights. The picture shows a nude woman relaxing and dreaming in late afternoon light. I like the relaxed reclining position.When I work, as in this case, I often use the paper colour as an integral part of the flesh painting.

Day 3: Dreaming on top of the world

A ten minute sketch, charcoal on paper. It shows a female nude sitting on a quilt.  I like this pose, it's sculptural and compact.  As a teenager I sculpted a figure in a similar position.  The model chose this pose herself. To me she looks as if she is sitting on top of the world.

Day 2: Morning has broken

This is the second in the series of my nude-a-day life drawings I am posting every day throughout January and February. This series was painted during October and November 2018.

The picture is an A3 pastel drawing.  It shows the back view of a female nude on a blue quilt with a dark background. This began as a pastel drawing and I scanned it and worked into the scan using Corel Painter.  I began cleaning up fingermarks and found I was working into the painting digitally without realising it. This is a whole new experience I accidently discovered.

Happy Newd Year - Day 1 A halo of golden light

 

This is the first of a series of nude studies that I am going to post every day through January and February 2019.

It is a pastel painting of a seated nude woman on dull green pastel card, size approximately A3.  As are most of the works.  I like it a lot because the pose is natural and the colours are bright.  On that day the natural light was very low because of a thundercloud, so I added the bright halo behind the model.
