Nude a day 47 Right hand over my shoulder

Pastel and water-based paints - AquaBrique

Recently working on this charcoal study I used AquaBriques:
  1. As crayon lines
  2. As raw strokes of green and raw sienna on the flesh
  3. As dilute washes on the hair and the foreground.
I think this is a good example of using them in three ways. What's good is you can work into a charcoal drawing with strong contrasts and colour.  I chose this viewpoint because I liked to see the model's hand against her hair.

See my video on how I draw nudes at https://youtu.be/E2BjhefGGGk

I hope you have liked the pictures so far. If you liked any of them enough, you can buy the original: £100 unframed plus P & P. Email me for more information at nandnjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

Anyway, please let me know what you think by commenting either on the blog or by email to me at the address above. As we did last year we will raffle away two prints among those who comment. So start commenting for a chance for a prize.!)

Nude-a-day 17: Planning the day

Pastel on yellow paper 29 x 28.5 cm

I ask myself "What is my figure thinking" and I use and I use the answer as a title for my picture. I used the light yellow colour of the paper as a flesh tone most noticeable on her upper body. I use the texture of the paper to break up the pastel strokes thus allowing it to happen.

I hope you have liked the pictures so far. If you liked any of them enough, you can buy the original: £100 unframed plus P & P. Email me for more information at nandnjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

Nude-a-day 7: Apple blossom time

Pastel on grey pastel paper. 32x24 cm

The red-haired model kneels on the grass looking up with her hands on a grass ground.

Thoughts after the first week

I really love to “draw from life.” I have done this since I was 16 and I'm now 83. As I draw I am in deep meditation and every time I feel different.I can't guess how my work will go,It has its own rules and I am just so excited at where it takes me. It's like going on an adventure. The results are not “Good” or “Bad”. The results aren't as important to me as the actual experience of creating.

I hope you like this series of nude studies. If you like them enough, you can buy the original: £100 unframed plus P & P. Email me for more information at nandnjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

Nude-a-day 5: Tom digging

Sumi (Japanese black ink) drawing, 27.5x40 cm.

I felt powerful as I drew with the sumi (Japanese black ink) and big brush.  I diluted the ink for this study.

Sometimes I feel it is like bungee jumping when I work, taking risks, there is no going back.  It's scary and exciting and you have a picture at the end.

I hope you like this series of nude studies. If you like them enough, you can buy the original: £100 unframed plus P & P. Email me for more information at nandnjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

The picture: Fine black line pen on white paper. Two minutes. Drawn as one continuous lin as much as I could.

What do you think? Drawing usinge one continuous line mkesyou observe the main shapes and not the details.  You'll notice that the arms are much shorter than the legs.  The legs were closer to my eyes but not that much/  I see her stretching first thing in the moring as she tries to throw off sleep.
Buy a print: For a high definition print of this drawing, or any in the series, contact me via nandjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.  A3 size will cost you £40 uk plus postage. A 4: £35 uk plus postage.

Nude of the day 50: Planning an adventure

Please comment: I put these pictures up to see what people think so please comment. A raffle at the end gives everyone who comments the chance of a free print. Read below to learn how to make a comment.
The picture: Charcoal, female nude reclining on a quilt, studying a map and planing an adventure.  Heavy dark shading at the back to bring her forward.  One legcovered with the quilt.

What do you think?  The whole body leans to the right and the left arm directs you to the open map. I find charcoal very useful to making an intense black.

Nude of the day 49: End of a perfect day

Please comment: I put these pictures up to see what people think so please comment. A raffle at the end gives everyone who comments the chance of a free print. Read below to learn how to make a comment.

The picture:Pastel on black pastel card.  The model lies on a deep blue quilt and a deep red cushion supports her head.

What do you think? I found it difficult painting flesh colours on a black pastel board and it was quite challenging, but I like challenges.  It's all part of the art adventure.

Please comment: I put these pictures up to see what people think so please comment. A raffle at the end gives everyone who comments the chance of a free print. Read below to learn how to make a comment.

The picture: Brown pastel on white paper.  Torso of a female nude standing with a stillness about the pose.

What do you think? I'm very proud of this drawing.  I like the torso masses and the folded hands.  I think it works very well.  How about you?

Day 8: Adjusting her hair - front view

Three-minute pose. Charcoal on pastel paper, female nude, full frontal pose, sitting, arms up, hands behind her head, which is looking down towards her left side. Right toe tucked behind left thigh, her balance is quite perfect.  This pose is similar to the back view in the previous post on January 7th, but the pose is not the same.  I would like to see them hung as a pair, like the picture below.  I would put them so that they are looking towards each other, rather than looking as if they are two women who are not speaking to each other even though it ise the same model.

Nude a week 24: Guest artist - Georg Mayer-Marton

Two nude sketches by Grorg Mayer-Marton

I was studying at Liverpool art college in the mid 50's when Georg Mayer-Marton arrived as a lecturer, small, grey and Hungarian.

From him I learned mosaics. At first I was trying to make them all nice and flat. He taught us to angle the tessera so that the light catches them. After his death a mosaic font of his has been installed in the Catholic cathedral in Liverpool.

He was a great artist and his art was very inspiring to me. He also took me aside, after looking at my drawings and taught me how to make silver-point drawings. One evening he took about three of us students round the Wirral to see his church mosaics. We piled into his tiny car and went from church to church. A lovely trip.

I found his lectures very hard to follow with his soft voice, his Hungarian accent and his very long sentences. During one of his lectures I drew this sketch (a good likeness). I also have a photo of him with me and other students.. It was taken in the summer of 1958 outside the front of Liverpool Art College. Mayer-Marton died in 1960.

The pictures here are from Mayer-Marton's website http://www.mayer-marton.com/ It contains a lovely article about him by my fellow student Gordon Millar and is well worth looking at.

Above are two of Georg Mayer-Marton's nude drawings. I like the fluid lines.  Below is a photograph of him with his students two years before he died.  Lastly a drawing I did of him during one of his lectures
End of the pedagog course 1958, outside Liverpool Art College. Left to right, back row: Sandra Lord, Anne Mossop, 4 women I don't know, Joyce Park, another woman I don't know, Georg Mayer Marton, Myra Shillington, Alex Morrison. Front row left to right: Jeanette Huxtable (now Jeanie Mellersh), Edith Rubinstein, (now Mathur) Albert Robinson.

Nude a week 9: Male nude in green chalk

A quick sketch in green chalk of a man reaching down and away
With very quick sketches the proportion sometimes falls by the wayside as I try to get the swing of the body.  In this case the swing of the pose was my primary concern and the proportions were secondary. As a result the legs look smaller than the torso.  When you draw with chalk there is no second chance.  Erasing isn't possible.
