Nude a day 57: The first woman on earth

Pastel on black pastel paper

This was an experiment – pastel on black pastel card, using a lot of light ochres and tangerines as flesh tones. I allowed the black card to take the shadow areas. All the colours behind her are singing out loudly over the black surface. It's good to let the lovely vibrant pastels glow like this!

Nude a day - ending in three days!

After 60 nudes Jeanie will end this series on Feb 29th 2020.  There will be occasional posts on this blog - some nudes, some other things. To mark the end of the series Jeanie has produced another video encouraging everyone to draw.  It includes her drawing a 2-minute sketch of her husband Nick.  Take a look on the link above

Nude a day 50: Thinking of you

26 x 39 cm. Pastel on blue-green paper.

The painting uses the blue-green paper colour as the shadow colour of the flesh. I like the light soft colours of this gentle picture.

Nude a day 47 Right hand over my shoulder

Pastel and water-based paints - AquaBrique

Recently working on this charcoal study I used AquaBriques:
  1. As crayon lines
  2. As raw strokes of green and raw sienna on the flesh
  3. As dilute washes on the hair and the foreground.
I think this is a good example of using them in three ways. What's good is you can work into a charcoal drawing with strong contrasts and colour.  I chose this viewpoint because I liked to see the model's hand against her hair.

Nude a day 46: See a pin and pick it up

See a pin and pick it up - All the day you'll have good luck!
See a pin and let it lie - Have bad luck until you die!
All because of a pin! Anyway,

I had good luck that day. I am very pleased with this sketch.

Nude a day 32: A snooze on a sunlit beach

I was keen to draw her strand of plaited hair so I then had a problem of extreme forshortening of her body. I really like this picture. It takes me to the beach, the sunlight and warmth looks good today (on this cold January day.) Breasts always flatten as you lie flat (unless they are implants!)

Nude-a-day 5: Tom digging

Sumi (Japanese black ink) drawing, 27.5x40 cm.

I felt powerful as I drew with the sumi (Japanese black ink) and big brush.  I diluted the ink for this study.

Sometimes I feel it is like bungee jumping when I work, taking risks, there is no going back.  It's scary and exciting and you have a picture at the end.

I hope you like this series of nude studies. If you like them enough, you can buy the original: £100 unframed plus P & P. Email me for more information at nandnjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

Nude of the day 52: Bright awakening

Please comment: I put these pictures up to see what people think so please comment. A raffle at the end gives everyone who comments the chance of a free print. Read below to learn how to make a comment.
The picture: Fine black line pen on white paper. Two minutes. Drawn as one continuous lin as much as I could.

What do you think? Drawing usinge one continuous line mkesyou observe the main shapes and not the details.  You'll notice that the arms are much shorter than the legs.  The legs were closer to my eyes but not that much/  I see her stretching first thing in the moring as she tries to throw off sleep.
Buy a print: For a high definition print of this drawing, or any in the series, contact me via nandjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.  A3 size will cost you £40 uk plus postage. A 4: £35 uk plus postage.
Video of nude drawn stroe by stroke We have just found this video we made some time ago showing a nude drawing being painted stroke by stroke. Thought you might find it interesting.

Nude of the day 50: Planning an adventure

Please comment: I put these pictures up to see what people think so please comment. A raffle at the end gives everyone who comments the chance of a free print. Read below to learn how to make a comment.
The picture: Charcoal, female nude reclining on a quilt, studying a map and planing an adventure.  Heavy dark shading at the back to bring her forward.  One legcovered with the quilt.

What do you think?  The whole body leans to the right and the left arm directs you to the open map. I find charcoal very useful to making an intense black.

A nude a week - and how I drew them

I have done hundreds of nude drawings and paintings, and I thought it was time to show them.  So this is the plan.  Over the next few weeks I will be publishing one of my nude pictures at least once a week and describing how  I painted that particular picture and adding a bit about painting nudes in general.  I hope you enjoy it.
Deeply relaxed.  Male nude, pastel on sand coloured paper 46 x 30 cm.  I like the way every aspect of the man is relaxed. Click on the picture so see it at a larger size.

How I painted this picture

This is a pastel I did at the group that meets in a village near where I live.  It was done on sand coloured paper using black, white, grey, soft brown and red-brown pastels.

You can see the curve of the spine from the model's bottom, up and over, along the neck and sweep down the arms with fingers dripping like molten wax. This is what I saw first and retained it throughout painting this pastel.

I used the colour of the paper as the main colour which united everything. You can see the colour of the paper coming through the flesh tones of the buttocks and where the light red-brown has an open quality because of the vertical grain of the paper.  I use a piece of pastel on its side pressing more on one end to to get the blending effect.  You can smudge with your fingers but it doesn't give the same sparkle.  Where the model's hair shone bright, I enhanced it with dark shadows beyond and did the same with his left hip.

How I paint nudes (part 1 of 7?)

What I'm interested in is the light and shade, the colours of the flesh, the body shape. the anatomy, bones skin and muscle  The way the neck sits on the body and the head on the neck, the fullness and the boneyness, the shadows and the texture of the cloth the model is sitting on.
I studied life drawing one day a week as a student at Liverpool art college.  We studied anatomy from a book and were tested on it in the first term.  At first I thought "I hate anatomy"  But thanks to the one day a week life drawing sessions and the skeleton hanging in the corner it has been part of my life ever since.

More soon with another picture drawn or painted in another medium.  By the way I hope to mount an exhibition of these paintings soon so if you can help it would be great.  Anyway please get in touch and if you feel you would like to buy any of the pictures, make me an offer.  We can probably do business.
