Pictures to support Jeanie's "People Drawing" Course Lesson 8
The picture above is to copy and print for Jeanie's People drawing lesson 8.
The picture as finished by Jeanie. You copy and print the first picture then try adding the white highlights with chalk or white pastel.
These two pictures are linked with Jeanie's "People Drawing" course. It is an exercise in lesson 8 which is about light and shadows and how they make a body look solid and three dimentional. The course is on Youtube and can be found on the channel "Colourful World of Jeanie" (Watch the spelling - "Colourful" with a "u" in the English way and "Jeanie" with only one "n".)

Make a Boxi figure to help you draw!
Boxi is a lay figure that will help you draw people. It is part of the Jeanie Mellersh "Drawing People" course that you can find here. Boxi helps to simplify the human body by representing it as a series of boxes and cones. This makes visualising the effects of perspective much easier. Boxy can be placed in any pose that the human body is capable of (and quite a few that it isn't!) and then viewed from any angle.
Boxi is made from 3 boxes (head, chest, and hips), 1 cylinder (neck), and 4 cones (legs), and 4 more cones (arms), hands and feet, and a length of thick string or thin rope cut into pieces to hold the arms, and legs together and form the spine. The pattern for the paper or card needed for the boxes and cones is below.
Print down the two pages below on A4 or equivalent paper, cut them, glue them, and make Boxi. To see how to use Boxi you will need to watch the Youtube Video that is shown at the end of this post..

Making Boxi - instructions
To make Boxi you will need thick string or thin rope, scissors, and glue. Also, you need printed versions of the patterns below on thin card or thickish paper. The pattern can be copied and printed from here. Just use this as a pattern for the shapes, and make Boxi any colour you choose. Feet and hands are folded in half.Page 1 of the Boxi pattern - arms (2 cones each), legs (2 cones each), hands, and feet. |

Nude a day 57: The first woman on earth
Pastel on black pastel paper
This was an experiment
– pastel on black pastel card, using a lot of light ochres and tangerines as
flesh tones. I allowed the black card to take the shadow areas. All
the colours behind her are singing out loudly over the black surface.
It's good to let the lovely vibrant pastels glow like this!

35 x 25 cm Pastel on dark green pastel paper.
Unusually, I have not included the paper colour
for tones. I have obliterated all the paper colour with light
orange-yellow pastel and darker cool colours with white for
highlights.

Charcoal on water colour paper. 27 x 48 cm
I like the tooth on this paper. It seems to give
strength to the drawing. On the shadowed areas, I smeared the thick charcoal outline into and below the muscles.

Nude a day 47 Right hand over my shoulder
Pastel and water-based paints - AquaBrique
Recently working on this charcoal study I used AquaBriques:
- As crayon lines
- As raw strokes of green and raw sienna on the flesh
- As dilute washes on the hair and the foreground.
I think this is a good example of using them in three ways. What's good is you can work into a charcoal drawing with strong contrasts and colour. I
chose this viewpoint because I liked to see the model's hand against
her hair.

Nude a day 43: The kiss
Special picture for my granddaughters Anouk and Juna who love all dogs especially their own.
Use this as your Valentine
I thought you might like to use this picture for your Valentine so here is the poem to go with it, written by my husband Nick.
The scene was so sweet, spontaneous, romantic! My model brought her dog. She struck this unusual pose and I quickly placed the limbs and the extreme angle and forgot the proportions! Her dog ran up to her and give her a kiss on the lips. Such a lovely moment!
